Tampa, FL — It was so windy on Stone Mountain yesterday, a group of young guys pretended to be human wind socks, and one asked me if the cable car was closed because of the wind. Yep, and I pointed to the spinning cup anemometer on top of the Skylift which measures wind speed and explained that when the buildings are open the park ranger can see the digital readings inside. A friendly voice carried our way asking “can you take our picture?” As I moved to do so, she thanked me, and the goofball guys jokingly said “you’re welcome!” to her. Even the steadiest hand was no contest for the whipping wind, but I still gathered everyone together and gave it a go. Silly me, I first thought the USF on some of their sweatshirts referred to the University of San Francisco and that maybe they were part of a visiting sports team, but then we started talking, and the University of South Florida students explained the amazing reason they’re in Atlanta from March 11-17.
Instead of idling away their college break on a beach or bar-hopping, they chose to participate in a volunteer service trip through the Bull Service Breaks program at USF as part of Alternative Spring Break. The co-eds’ focus this week is on public health, specifically “senior independence and food security,” and they’re also offering gardening and music therapy at A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab facility, riding along with Meals On Wheels Atlanta to deliver food to seniors, and helping Project Open Hand pack nutritious meals for ill, homebound, or disabled members of Metro Atlanta’s community. Not trying to sound twee, but it’s really moving that young adults from another state are here helping our senior community — and not because they were ordered to do community service! Plus, they were nice enough to let me me wax on like some kind of female Howard Zinn offering “a people’s history” of Stone Mountain for a few minutes!

Belle Glade, FL & Miami, FL—Rokeise Lynch, 27, and Brittany Ingram, 28, of Palm Beach County, FL(L) visited Atlanta for the first time to celebrate Rokeise's birthday. After a day of ziplining in Helen with Nacoochee Adventures, they climbed Stone Mountain for the first time. Earlier, they visited the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I ❤ how these spirited Mary Kay ladies from Miami Florida videobombed them in this clip.

Houston, TX — Genesis Campos, 22, Esther, 22, and Gethsemane, 26
+ August 31, 2017 — The harrowing footage of utter deluge in Houston, so many people and animals adrift or overcome by rising waters, stirs up so many powerful emotions and remains difficult to watch. I already smell mold and mildew setting in from here and want to change my socks on everyone's behalf. But hope is a levee. A kayak and a canoe. It’s oars and courageous guidance out of flood waters to a safe dry spot. It’s aid rendered and received. And gratefulness to be alive, but lined warmly with the satisfaction of survival being sweeter when it so willingly depends upon others and returns the favor. It always has been better together. It’s breathing. And you knowing, not just saying, that everything else is replaceable. Hope is how an eclipse and a hurricane have unified more people recently than most anything else. It’s the Paul Simon lyric in my head right now, “peace like a river ran through the city.”
Hope has the face of every single person who extends helping hands and comfort to others in troubled times. And here’s hoping the young Latina women from Houston that I met briefly at the mountain in the middle of May are okay. Genesis, 22, Esther, 22, and Gethsemane, 26. “How cool! Three friends with biblical names,” I said to them, and they laughed an OMG in unison. That had never even occurred to them in all their years of friendship. I just sent Genesis an email to check on them and shared this video of she and her friends on higher ground just a few months ago.

Tucker, Ga — Clint Tate, 86, Today I was fortunate to meet Clint Tate, of Tucker, GA, climbing Stone Mountain on his 86th birthday. The former Marine still works as a tax attorney and CPA and climbs the mountain every year on his birthday. We created a bit of an inspirational commotion as we talked, and one mother whose son is currently a Marine couldn't resist giving him a big hug. Here Clint shares some life advice (and off camera he warned against red meat and encouraged good red wine).

Indonesia — When I Faden performing a thrilling balancing act on the steep hand rails at Stone Mountain a year ago on this date, February 6, 2016, I had no idea at the time that it fell into a special category of urban sporting known as "parkour." I simply assumed Faden, who was originally born in Indonesia and spoke English and Arabic, was a gifted tightrope walker or aerialist.
