I first saw Elvir "Andie" Ibrisimovic doing a walking handstand down Stone Mountain

When I first saw Elvir "Andie" Ibrisimovic doing a walking handstand down Stone Mountain, I had no idea the 24 year-old mechanical engineer was from Croatia or that he and his 20 year-old brother Edin, a Georgia Tech undergrad in mechanical engineering, attended my high school. In fact, Edin was the valedictorian of Stone Mountain High in 2012.

And though Edin (Edie) was too young to remember much of the Bosnian War (1992-1995) before he and his family fled the country for the U.S., Elvir recalls seeing someone executed and even bodies dumped in trenches not far from Dubrovnik when he was a boy. When I asked what it's like for them when they go back home, Elvir spoke fondly of the gorgeous beaches along the Adriatic Sea, but Edin added, "In a way you're always an outsider, here and there. Here people consider you Croatian, and there they treat you like an American."
