On April 7th, I ran into nineteen year-old elite road racing cyclist Willem Kaiser on Stone Mountain. He had biked miles from his home in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood to the mountain and took the time to climb it with friends as part of his training for the Tour of the Gila 2017, which his team, Gateway Harley-Davidson/Trek U25 Cycling, is currently participating in over in Silver City, New Mexico through Sunday, April 23rd. Willem didn't end up riding with his team on this particular race after all, but later this month he races in the 38th annual Twilight Criterium in Athens, GA, and then competes in the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California in May. You can follow his team's current race in New Mexico over at Cycling News or on the their Facebook page. I love how the charmed springtime dusk hour even allowed Willem and I to see a family of five deer in the woods that envelop many areas on the mountain.
