Five years ago, Jonathan, 41, fell from the third floor balcony of his apartment in Decatur, GA, when the railing gave way. When I first spotted him with his forearm crutches, I had another story made up in my mind, like we often do before talking to someone (I first wondered if he might have cerebral palsy). Regardless, I was impressed that someone with crutches was on the mountain in the first place, no matter that he rode the Skylift. His sister Lori, 43, was visiting from Cincinnati, OH, with her daughter Julia, 12, and her boyfriend Thomas before Jonathan started classes at Georgia Perimeter College (he hasn't done much in the years since the accident, he said, and I've left out many details here, because his lawsuit against the apartment complex was recently reopened for discovery).
"One day I'll have a helicopter and fly up here, and it'll have air conditioning," he said.
The park also makes wheelchairs available, though this empty one (from a different afternoon) might make you wonder just where its passenger went. Many freshly painted Slippery When Wet signs have recently appeared, too.
